Forests are often said to be the “gills of the planet,”
because they keep the air clean by removing harmful carbon dioxide and
replacing it with oxygen. According to the Society of American Foresters,
just one tree absorbs 13 pounds of carbon dioxide in one year. With
over 30 percent of the earth covered in forests, that’s a lot
of filtering.
Precisely because forests play such an important role in our lives,
consumers are looking more closely at the health of our forests. For
the cellulose acetate industry, there is something very important to
remember: forests are renewable – they can, and are, actively
being replanted.

Through aggressive reforestation
programs, such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) in the US,
foresters have embarked on a campaign to balance society’s need for
wood with stewardship of forests. Thanks to this initiative, in the US
alone, companies who own and manage America’s private forests replant
an estimated 4.8 million trees each day.
Replanting and careful maintenance of our forests are critical to the health
of our planet. It also ensures a sustainable supply of cellulose acetate
yarn to the industry, and most important, provides reassurance to consumers
that they are wearing fabrics from an eminently renewable source. |
